In one of my previous posts, we have seen about CPU Architecture of Android. Now in this post, we will see different smartphone processor manufacturers. Architecture is related to the design part, those architectures are used in Processors.

For example, some ABC processor can be manufactured by using one or more of those architectures (Eg: Helio P90 is made of 2x ARM Cortex-A75, 6x ARM Cortex-A55 - Octa Core i.e., ARM Cortex-A75 and ARM Cortex-A55 are architectures).

Smartphone Processor Manufacturers: Qualcomm, Mediatek, Nvidia, HiSilicon, Apple Bionic, Samsung Exynos, Intel Atom etc.

There are many processor manufacturers in the mobile industry. But most of them use ARM architecture in their products. There some alternatives to ARM but it is most popular, widely used architecture in our smartphones. Some of the Processor manufacturers are Qualcomm Snapdragon, MediaTek, Apple's Bionic, Samsung's Exynos, Hisilicon's Kirin, Nvidia's Tegra and few others.

Qualcomm Snapdragon

It has released 5 series of processors namely in 2xx, 4xx, 6xx, 7xx, 8xx. Off those except series 2 others are 64-bit and Octa-Core. Series 2 is 32-bit with 4 cores. Almost all the Android phones releasing today have Series 8 Processors.

Features of these processors are Quick Charge, Signal Boost antenna boost technology, Qualcomm Mobile Security, Qualcomm Spectra Camera ISP. Qualcomm started production since 2007, in the initial years, it has released processors under Sx series.

For the first 5 years it has released processors under the name Snapdragon Sx series i.e., S1, S2, S3, S4. After that from 2013, it has released under the name 200, 400, 600, 700 and 800 series. Upon that there are different types and models under those series.

MediaTek

After Snapdragon this has next best market. Though this company started from 1997 it released its first processor in 2003. This is a Taiwanese company. Most of the China mobiles have these processors. Both China and Taiwan mobile manufacturers use these processors. At present Helio processors are in a best run and before Helio was introduced there were many other processors, listing them here will be difficult.

Processors from Apple

Most of the processors from Apple are faster than the rest used in Android devices. These are much powerful and with the introduction of Bionic chips, Apple went 1 year ahead of all other processor manufacturers (development is 1 year ahead in performance wise).

The interesting thing is all the processors used in Apple devices are manufactured by Samsung and TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Limited). Only the design part is done by Apple. Till A9 chip both Samsung and TSMC manufactured processors for Apple, after that, it was only TSMC. Each of the processor released is better in performance to its predecessor.

There was only one series called A Series used in iPhones. The types range from A4 to A12. Their names (types) are A4, A5, A5X, A6, A6X, A7, A8, A8X, A9, A9X, A10 Fusion, A10X Fusion, A11 Bionic, A12 Bionic, A12X Bionic.

Exynos from Samsung

These are manufactured by Samsung and found only in its devices. Compared to Snapdragon these processors gives the best performance in Samsung devices. It means a Samsung device with an Exynos processor gives better performance than the Snapdragon processor. As they are the manufacturers they will take care to optimize those chips in their devices. Till now it has released Exynos 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9. They have started to release these chips from 2010 with Exynos 3 Single 3110. Their complete list is below.

Kirin from HiSilicon

HiSilicon is Chinese company fully owned by Huawei. HiSilicon is reputed to be the largest domestic designer of integrated circuits in China. It was founded in 1991. First, the well-known processor is the K3V2 used in Huawei Ascend D Quad XL (U9510) smartphones and Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD7 tablets.

This chipset is based on the ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore fabbed at 40 nm and uses a 16 core Vivante GC4000 GPU. The SoC support LPDDR2-1066, but actual products are found with LPDDR-900 instead for lower power consumption. Latest processors from it are Kirin. Total 10 types were released under Kirin. The list is shown below. These chips are mostly used in Huawei and few other smartphones.

Tegra from Nvidia

Like Intel, Nvidia is also not famous for manufacturing mobile processors. There are very fewer devices with those chipsets. Nvidia manufactured 5 processors till now. These chipsets are not popular and used in few smartphones only. HTC One X, HTC One X+, Xolo Play T1000, Blackphone and Xiaomi Mi3 came with chips from this manufacturer. Along with those there are few laptop and Tablets also have these chips (processors).

Finally, from the above list, we can say that Apple's chips (processors) give much performance and Snapdragon are much widely used chips in Android devices. Next to Snapdragon Mediatek is used but mainly in China mobiles. Intel also produced few chips for mobiles but back in 2016, it has halted its production in Smartphone industry. Intel produced Atom, Core M, Pentium M, and Sandy Bridge. Whatever maybe only Snapdragon has the highest share in the smartphone processor manufacturing market.
